The Solid Oak Sideboard March 3, 2010 No Comments

Before extolling the virtues of a solid oak sideboard I think it is worth spending a little bit of time describing exactly what a sideboard is and why it has a key place at the center of many households.  In today’s modern and often fast paced times there seem to be fewer and fewer opportunities for the family to get together and actually spend some time talking, eating or simply just being together.  Sitting down at the dining room table and enjoying a meal together is still however one ritual that many across the country still value and still hold onto.

If you are one such family that does still enjoy the family meal then you will know that typically the dining room requires particular furniture types, without which you would end up, getting up and down out of your chairs the throughout the whole meal and as a consequence not get to enjoy the gathering as much.  The first, and clearly the most important is the dining room table and chairs, but the next item of furniture, and the reason for establishing this site is the sideboard.

The sideboard is an essential component of the dining room, being an item of furniture that during periods when not in use is incredibly useful for storing items of crockery, drinking glasses, and other potentially fragile items that otherwise would get in the way in the kitchen and continually be at risk of being broken.  For example, the sideboard may well be very useful for storing a precious china tea set which is used only occasionally.  Alternatively it might be used to store a set of crystal wine glasses, again which would be in continual danger of breakage were they to reside in the kitchen.

Most sideboard furniture is quite large and robust.  Solid wood is a common material for use in their construction, and in my opinion, the solid oak sideboard is one of the best versions of the solid wood version that is available to purchase today. It is this robustness of course that makes the sideboard a good place to store fragile items; any knocks or bumps will have little chance of damaging the items within.

The other useful purpose of the sideboard is for displaying food on during a meal that is waiting to be served.  It allows the dining room table to be kept free from clutter and means that there is a convenient place to store items relating to the meal that means that someone is not spending all their time returning to the kitchen ferrying and carrying.

As stated previously this site has been set up to promote the use of the solid oak sideboard in your home.  However, hopefully you can see, solid oak or not the sideboard is actually an essential item of furniture that makes the whole dining experience more efficient and gives good storage capability for fragile items that otherwise would be vulnerable to damage.
